Epiphone Firebird - Wine Red
The Epiphone Firebird – Wine Red is one of those guitars that doesn’t just sit in the mix — it cuts through it. Visually, sonically, everything about it stands apart. That reverse body, the six-in-line headstock — it’s pure rock ‘n’ roll attitude, and it’s been turning heads since the early ’60s.
Originally designed by legendary automotive designer Ray Dietrich, the Firebird wasn’t just another Gibson shape — it was a complete rethink. And this Epiphone version stays true to that legacy, right down to the neck-through-body construction. You’ve got a 9-ply mahogany and walnut neck running through the entire body, which gives it incredible sustain and a really solid, resonant feel. Everything — pickups, bridge, tuners — is anchored into the same core, and you can feel that connection when you play it.
The neck itself has a SlimTaper C profile, so it’s fast and comfortable without feeling too thin. It’s paired with a bound rosewood fingerboard, 22 medium jumbo frets and trapezoid inlays, giving it that classic Gibson-style feel while still being easy to get around. It’s a guitar that invites you to move up and down the neck without thinking twice.
Now, the pickups — this is where the Firebird really earns its voice. You’ve got a set of Epiphone ProBucker FB720 Firebird pickups, built to vintage ’60s specs with Alnico 2 magnets. These aren’t your standard humbuckers, and they’re not mini humbuckers either — they’ve got their own thing going on entirely. With blade magnets inside the coils and no pole pieces, they deliver a tone that’s bright, clear and articulate, but still hum-free and full of character. There’s a real snap and definition there, especially when you dig in.
The controls are straightforward — independent volume and tone for each pickup with a 3-way toggle, all running through CTS pots, so everything feels smooth and responsive.
Hardware is solid across the board. You’ve got an Epiphone LockTone Tune-O-Matic bridge and Stop Bar tailpiece for stability and sustain, Grover Mini Rotomatic tuners in that classic six-in-line layout, and a Graph Tech nut to keep everything tuning nicely. The Firebird logo on the pickguard finishes it off — a small detail, but it ties the whole look together.
And that Wine Red finish? Proper classy. Deep, rich, and suits the shape perfectly — bold without being loud.
At Musicmaker, this is the kind of guitar we’d hand to someone who wants something different — not just another single-cut or double-cut, but something with a bit of edge and identity.
