Sounds and Sequences That Take You by Surprise

Moog has done it again, and this time they’ve brought us the Labyrinth, perhaps their quirkiest and most fascinating instrument yet. This new addition to their beloved line of desktop semi-modular synthesizers is here to blow your mind and tweak your ears in ways you never thought possible. The Moog Labyrinth, dubbed a "parallel generative analog synthesizer," uses "West Coast" sound manipulation techniques and wild, probabilistic sequencing to create sounds that evolve and surprise you over time.

Self-Contained Innovation

The Labyrinth follows in the footsteps of Moog's previous desktop semi-modular synths, each of which has its unique twist on sound creation and sequencing. Unlike the more processor-focused Spectravox, the Labyrinth is a standalone powerhouse, perfect for both newbies dipping their toes into modular synthesis and seasoned pros looking for fresh inspiration.

While Moog's previous instruments have relied on their classic synthesis techniques, the Labyrinth takes a different route. Inspired by the pioneering designs of Donald Buchla and his Music Easel, the Labyrinth incorporates West Coast synthesis techniques, creating a rich and evolving soundscape that’s a departure from the familiar Moog sound.

The heart of the Labyrinth is its complex and interconnected sound generation structure, which is a bit of a departure from typical Moog fare. It features two oscillators—one producing sine waves, the other triangle waves—and a noise source with variable colour control. You won't find your typical saw or pulse waves here, but don't fret; the Labyrinth has plenty of tricks to add harmonic complexity.

Inter-Oscillator Modulation

One of the standout features is the ability to modulate between the two oscillators. The primary oscillator can be modulated by the secondary one, enabling thru-zero frequency modulation. This allows for rich, stable tones without the detuning issues of traditional analog FM. And with ring modulation in the mix, you can achieve both wild, clangorous sounds and subtle, expressive vibrato.

The Labyrinth’s mixer is a treasure trove of sonic potential. At the 12:00 position, it passes signals at unity gain, but turn the knobs up and you introduce saturation and distortion, transforming those sine and triangle waves into thick, textured tones. The signal then splits, heading into a voltage-controlled wavefolder and a state-variable filter. These can be used in parallel or series, giving you endless possibilities for shaping your sound.

The wavefolder is a marvel, adding harmonics by folding waveforms back on themselves. It’s voltage-controllable, allowing real-time modulation for dynamic sound shaping. The state-variable filter offers a smooth blend between lowpass and bandpass responses, perfect for sculpting your tone with precision.

The Power of Chance

At the core of the Labyrinth’s generative magic are its dual probabilistic sequencers. These eight-step sequencers use chance operations to create patterns that twist and evolve over time, ensuring your compositions stay fresh and unpredictable. They’re synced by default but can be independently triggered, opening up even more creative avenues.

The Labyrinth’s patch bay is a playground for sonic exploration. It offers ample points for reconfiguring your signal path and integrating with other gear. Whether you’re syncing via analog clock or MIDI, the Labyrinth fits seamlessly into any setup, making it a versatile addition to your studio or live rig.
