Let's check it out.

I feel like finding the right desk for all this equipment was probably more challenging

Understanding the Basics

  • Familiarise Yourself with Music Theory: While not mandatory, having a basic understanding of music theory can greatly benefit your music production journey. Learn about scales, chords, and song structure to better comprehend the building blocks of music. It'll make the whole journey a little more smooth. If you have't yet, why not check out our section in Music Books dedicated to Music Theory.
  • Get to Know Your Tools: Explore different Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) such as Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro, or GarageBand. Experiment with their features and functionalities to find the one that best suits your workflow and preferences. Some basic versions of these are available online as open source programs, while version of Ableton and Logic will come with various MIDI Controllers and Audio Interfaces as standard, so access is extremely affordable.

Simple yet extremely effective

Setting Up Your Studio

  • Acquire Essential Equipment: Invest in the necessary equipment for your home studio setup, including a computer, audio interface, studio monitors or headphones, and a MIDI controller. Start with the basics and gradually expand your setup as you progress. We'llhave a closer look at some of the important tools needed a little later in this article.
  • Create a Comfortable Workspace: Creativity happens easiest in a space free from terrifying clutter and distraction. It's hard to write a sweet tune if your staring at all the dirty laundry you're studiously ignoring. Designate a dedicated space for your studio setup, preferably in a quiet environment with minimal mess. Ensure proper ergonomics and organisation to enhance your workflow and creativity.

Learning the Basics of Recording

  • Explore Audio Recording: You can familiarise yourself with the process of recording audio, whether it's vocals, instruments, or external sound sources. Learn about microphone techniques, signal flow, and gain staging to capture high-quality recordings. I mean, this one is certainly important but not vital. It just depends on your musical preferences. That said, electronic music often sounds much more rich with acoustic instruments involved.
  • Experiment with MIDI: Dive into MIDI recording to create virtual instrument tracks using your MIDI controller. Explore different MIDI programming techniques, such as note editing, quantisation, and automation, to bring your ideas to life. MIDI Controllers can be quite inexpensive and often come with a basic version of popular DAWs, so it's certainly the fastest way to get into music production.

You'll need some semi-decent speakers, more on that next.....

Essential Equipment

So as I've mentioned before, you can get stuck into song building with as little equipment as a computer and the Novation Launchkey Mini [Mk3]. It comes with an excellent software bundle which will have you creating songs pretty much instantly. That said, if you want to set up a semi-comprehensive studio, there are a few items that will make your production life easier and likely give you better results overall.

Audio Interfaces

For those of you looking to record voices or instruments, an audio interface serves as the bridge between your instruments, microphones, and DAW. Look for an interface with high-quality preamps, low latency, and sufficient inputs and outputs to accommodate your needs. Most decent interfaces these days will also have a basic version of a DAW included so if you have a guitar and a computer at home, you would be well on your way to recording some music.
