How to Read Guitar Tab: A Beginner's Guide

Learning to read guitar tab is an essential skill for any beginner guitarist. Tablature, or "tab" for short, is a visual representation of guitar music that shows you where to place your fingers on the fretboard. In this beginner's guide, we'll show you how to read guitar tab and get started playing your favourite songs.

Understanding the Basics

Guitar tab is usually written using six horizontal lines that represent the six strings on the guitar. The line at the bottom represents the thickest string (the low E string), and the line at the top represents the thinnest string (the high E string). Numbers are written on the lines to indicate which fret to play on each string. For example, if there's a "0" on the low E string, that means you play that string open (without pressing down any frets).

The basic idea in relation to notation. For the first three notes (E,F,G) play an open E string, then the E string with the first fret, the the E string with the third fret

Reading Chords

Chords are groups of notes played together to create a harmonious sound. In tab, chords are often written as a series of numbers stacked vertically on top of each other. For example, a C chord might be written as "0 1 0 2 3 0," which means you play the open low E string, first fret on the A string, open D string, second fret on the G string, third fret on the B string, and open high E string.

Practicing with Easy Songs

The best way to learn how to read guitar tab is by practicing with easy songs. Look for tablature for your favourite songs online and try to play along. Start with simple songs that only use a few chords, and gradually work your way up to more complex songs.

It's a journey

Paying Attention to Rhythm

While guitar tab shows you which notes to play, it doesn't indicate the rhythm of the song. You'll need to listen to the song or find a separate rhythm chart to learn how to play the song with the correct timing. But also, get yourself a metronome. It's an invaluable tool. Better yet, find a drummer.....
