Take Our Totes And Be Free!
Ah the Tote Bag.
Part fashion statement, part environmental conscientiousness, part convenient marketing tool….
All Bag.
And bags are great.
But what do they say about us as Human Beings?
Let’s find out…….
GREEN
I enjoy trees. I live for long walks in the woods; heady, loamy smells teasing the nostrils, locks bouncing in the breeze. My footwear of choice is the sandal or welly, or if things are getting serious, a very sensible hiking boot. Fleece, I wear a lot of fleece. My bag contains odourless organic soaps and packaging free pulses and lentils. Possibly a small chunk of Palo Santo, a lighter and some essential oils, just in case.
Unless of course, it’s St. Patrick's Day. Then I am one and I am all, nationless and free and today…… today we’re getting messy…..
PINK
There’s freedom here, but also fear. There is pink in youth, in innocence. There is pink in joy and abandon. Love. But there is also pink in the sweaty confines of a narcissistic mortgage broker's salmon-coloured dress shirt. Of heaving (W)bankers in a Baggot St. beer garden, too full of Heino’s in the afternoon and loudly proclaiming their wealth to one another due to their deep seated fears of irrelevance.
Make love, not finance.
RED
IliketogoreallyfastandI’mreallyratherexcitable…..! Red is cool though isn’t it? Unless you’re a Bull, which i’m going to assume you aren’t, because you’re reading this…. unless ….. Wait, we’re getting sidetracked. Red. You straddle the line between classy and racy, flirting with exotic dangers in high heels. Moving from soirée to soirée with carefree abandon, you display a good natured freedom to which we should aspire.
Red lives.
BLUE
Are you calm? I’m calm. But I own a dryrobe, and a BMW, and likely a property in the Dalkey/Deansgrange area which, as life factors, make it considerably easier to remain calm. But blue is calming, perhaps because of the ocean and a very compelling theory that states that perhaps, humans had a mildly aquatic period in our evolution, which is why any of us can stare at the sea and feel our moods loosen.
Anyway, maybe we'll pop a tiny bottle of champers in there, to have on the seafront with the gurls ya know. Latte after anyone?
PRIDE
A proud symbol of togetherness and better times to come. When displaying the rainbow we do so out of hope, optimism and positivity, and it has been a prominent feature of art and culture worldwide, throughout history. Also, much like biscuits, why choose one colour when you can choose them all. I’d like to take the piss but I’m really finding it difficult to find an angle……
GREY
Let’s all just reign it in a little shall we.
ORANGE
Ahem. Look. I know what you’re thinking. That’s not where we’re going with this. Orange is an enthusiastic colour, it’s got vitality. It’s like the joyous little brother of the rather more wild Red, caring nothing for history (Except….ehm…) and feeling a kinship with the changing of the seasons, either fruit ripening or leaves signalling the end of the summer months. But it’s also a warning; there could be danger here. It's gently cautionary, much like the past is to the present......
Orange also spent a while claiming to be the new black but come on, we all know black will always be the new black, as well as the old black.
BLACK
Is Cool. It just is. It's the new black, the old black and whatever black may have happened in between those two. Sometimes it's even Vantablack, the blackest of all the blacks. Maybe the stereotypes are true and you have some extra mascara in this bag, a copy of Metal Hammer magazine and a bottle of Buckfast, but it will always be cool. Like the little black dress, the slimming and understated cool of the black shirt or the undeniable appeal of Satan, black always works.
Got any questions about these tote bags? About other tote bags? About how it is that any writing tool, pen, pencil or whatever, will simply vanish into the ether if dropped?
