Some acoustic guitars are recognisable from the other side of the room. The Hummingbird is one of them. That square-shouldered body, split parallelogram inlays and gloriously elaborate bird-and-flower pickguard have been part of guitar culture for decades, and the Epiphone Inspired by Gibson Hummingbird Studio in Ebony brings that unmistakable character into a much more accessible acoustic-electric package.

And Ebony really suits it. Against the dark gloss finish, the Hummingbird graphics, multi-ply binding, pearloid inlays and nickel hardware jump out beautifully. It's simultaneously classy and just flamboyant enough – rather like somebody turning up to an acoustic session in an exceptionally good embroidered shirt.

Underneath the decoration is a proper square-shoulder dreadnought, built with a solid spruce top and layered mahogany back and sides. That's a tried-and-tested acoustic combination for good reason. The spruce brings response, definition and dynamic range, while the mahogany contributes warmth and body. The result is a guitar capable of delivering the rich, balanced projection you'd want from a Hummingbird-style instrument, whether you're digging into big open chords or backing off for more delicate accompaniment.

The mahogany neck uses a comfortable Rounded C profile and is attached with a glued-in tapered dovetail joint. A rosewood fingerboard gives you a 12" radius, 20 standard frets and those instantly recognisable pearloid split parallelogram inlays. The 24.75" scale length is another important part of the formula, giving the strings a slightly more relaxed feel than a typical 25.5" acoustic scale.

Plugging in is handled by a Fishman S-Core under-saddle pickup and Fishman preamp system, making the Hummingbird Studio ready for gigs, rehearsals, recording and open-mic duties without having to stick another pickup across the soundhole. Depending on the exact Studio configuration, the controls are kept conveniently accessible while maintaining the guitar's traditional appearance.

Hardware is similarly sensible. A rosewood belly-up bridge anchors the strings, while Grover Rotomatic tuners provide dependable tuning at the rather handsome 60s Kalamazoo-style headstock. There's even a dual-action truss rod for proper setup adjustment as the instrument settles in over time.

And importantly, this package includes a standard Epiphone gig bag. That's a welcome addition on an acoustic you're actually going to take out of the house, rather than leaving you to discover at checkout that protecting your enormous shiny new dreadnought is apparently tomorrow's problem.
