Avalon Guitars S12ce - 135-Year-Old Brazilian Mahogany
The Avalon S12ce – 135-Year-Old Brazilian Mahogany is not simply a handcrafted acoustic guitar. It is the continuation of a story that began long before any modern player ever touched a string.
Hidden for generations in the countryside outside Seville, Spain, Avalon uncovered an extraordinary reserve of Brazilian Mahogany — timber that had been carefully stored by the same family for over 135 years. Protected from the elements, left to season naturally across more than a century, the wood slowly developed the kind of maturity, stability, and tonal complexity that modern timber simply cannot imitate. Time did the work no factory ever could.
When Avalon was given the opportunity to acquire it, the offer came with one condition: the entire stock had to be purchased — all 12.5 tonnes of it. A remarkable commitment, but also a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build instruments from material carrying genuine history within its grain.
The S12ce is one of the most intimate and expressive results of that decision.
Built entirely from this remarkable Brazilian Mahogany — top, back, sides, and neck — the guitar possesses a tonal identity that feels deeply connected and unusually cohesive. There’s warmth, certainly, but not the soft indistinct warmth often associated with mahogany guitars. This is mature, seasoned mahogany with exceptional clarity and balance. Notes bloom quickly, sustain naturally, and carry a dry, articulate character that feels refined rather than exaggerated.
The smaller S body shape gives the instrument remarkable responsiveness. It reacts instantly beneath the fingers, making it an exceptional companion for fingerstyle playing, vocal accompaniment, recording work, and players who value nuance over sheer volume. There’s an honesty to the sound — direct, expressive, and deeply musical.
And then there is the craftsmanship itself.
In Avalon’s Northern Irish workshop, these guitars are still built the old way: by luthiers, not assembly lines. Every brace is shaped by hand. Every top voiced individually. Every piece of timber selected not simply for appearance, but for resonance, feel, and balance. There is patience in these instruments. Restraint. Confidence.
Visually, the S12ce carries understated elegance throughout. The rich character of the aged Brazilian Mahogany is framed beautifully by sycamore bindings, while the ebony fingerboard, bridge, and headplate add refinement and precision. The solid Paua Abalone rosette and Mother of Pearl Avalon logo offer subtle luxury without distracting from the guitar’s natural presence.
Fitted with an LR Baggs Element pickup system, the S12ce translates effortlessly into live and studio environments, retaining the warmth, articulation, and dynamic sensitivity that define the instrument acoustically.
This is not a guitar built to impress for five minutes in a showroom. It is built for years of playing. Years of songs. Years of becoming familiar in the hands.
At Musicmaker, instruments like the Avalon S12ce remind us that the finest guitars are never only about specifications. They carry provenance, patience, craftsmanship, and memory — and occasionally, if you are lucky, a century and a half of history as well.
