Pre-Owned MXR Double-Double Drive Pedal

The Pre-Owned MXR M250 Double-Double Overdrive Pedal is a particularly tasty find for guitarists who like their drive pedals versatile, uncomplicated and built like they fully expect to be stepped on for the next twenty years. Now discontinued by MXR, the Double-Double squeezes two distinct classic-style overdrive circuits into one compact stompbox, giving you everything from warm mid-focused crunch to bigger, broader high-gain drive.

The magic happens with the simple Lo/Hi Gain toggle switch. In Low Gain mode, the Double-Double delivers a rich, midrange-focused overdrive that's ideal for bluesy breakup, classic rock crunch, pushing an already cooking valve amp or simply giving a clean tone a healthy shove towards misbehaviour.

Flick over to High Gain mode and things get considerably hairier. There's more gain available, while the frequency response places greater emphasis on the high and low end, resulting in a bigger, more aggressive drive character. It's a genuinely useful second voice rather than merely the same sound, but angrier.

MXR also gives you considerably more control over the EQ than you'll find on many traditional overdrive pedals. Dedicated Bass and Treble controls allow you to shape the low and high frequencies independently, making it much easier to match the pedal to different guitars, pickups and amplifiers. Alongside those you'll find straightforward Drive and Level controls, so dialling in anything from a subtle boost to a singing lead sound doesn't require consulting a manual every three minutes.

The true bypass switching keeps the Double-Double out of your signal path when disengaged, while MXR's familiar rugged metal enclosure makes it perfectly suited to pedalboard life. Power comes from a 9V battery or compatible 9V DC power supply, with a very modest current draw of less than 14mA.

And because this particular Double-Double is pre-owned, there's another reason it's interesting: MXR now lists the M250 as a legacy model that's no longer in production. If you've been specifically hunting for one, you're officially shopping in used-pedal territory.

For blues, classic rock, indie, alternative and straight-up rock guitar, there's loads to explore here. Use the Low mode as your always-on foundation, crank the High mode for heavier sounds, or set the Level high and Drive low to give your amp a proper kick in the trousers.

Two flavours of drive, proper two-band EQ and classic MXR stompbox toughness. Not bad for one little cream-coloured box.

The name Double-Double also makes considerably more sense once you play it. Although we're still disappointed it doesn't come with chips.
