Pre-Owned Martin DR Centennial Limited Edition Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar
Some guitars are built to look expensive. Others are built around the bits that actually matter when you hit an open G chord. The Pre-Owned Martin DR Centennial Limited Edition Dreadnought sits very firmly in the second camp – an understated, seriously specced American-made Martin created as part of the celebration of 100 years of the dreadnought.
And Martin did not mess about with the timber. Up front you've got an Adirondack spruce top treated with Martin's Vintage Tone System (VTS), paired with East Indian rosewood back and sides. VTS uses controlled ageing of the spruce to give the top characteristics associated with older, seasoned timber. Couple that with a big D-14 fret dreadnought body and you've got the ingredients for the sort of powerful, open acoustic voice that makes dreadnought players grin like they've just been handed the good flatpick.
Underneath that Adirondack top sits forward-shifted, scalloped X-bracing. This construction allows the soundboard to respond freely, helping produce plenty of projection, bass authority and dynamic range. Dig into it with a pick and there's serious headroom available; ease back and there's enough definition for more delicate chord work and fingerstyle.
The neck keeps things considerably more modern than the Centennial name might suggest. Martin's Modified Low Oval profile with High Performance Taper provides a comfortable playing feel, while the 1 3/4" bone nut offers a little extra room for accurate fretting and fingerstyle work. A 25.4" scale, East Indian rosewood fingerboard and 20 frets complete a setup that feels unmistakably Martin without demanding baseball-mitt-sized hands.
Visually, it's beautifully restrained. The satin natural finish, antique white binding, tortoise-pattern pickguard, old-style script headstock logo and nickel open-gear tuners with butterbean buttons give it an appropriately traditional look. There's no unnecessary bling fighting for attention here. The wood, construction and sound are doing the talking.
And because this particular guitar is pre-owned, there's another attraction: the DR Centennial is now a retired Martin model. It's an opportunity to pick up an interesting chapter from Martin's dreadnought story rather than something you can simply order fresh from the current catalogue.
As with any pre-owned instrument, cosmetic condition and signs of previous use should be judged from the individual product photographs. What doesn't change is the underlying recipe – Adirondack VTS spruce, East Indian rosewood, forward-shifted scalloped bracing and that unmistakable Martin dreadnought DNA. For the player who wants a proper acoustic cannon without a load of fancy decoration getting in the way, this is a very tasty thing indeed.
