Frauen Komponieren - Piano Music by Female Composers

Female composers have triumphed in the face of historical prejudices and opposition. For a significant period, a prevailing bias contended that women lacked the inherent creative talent to compose remarkable music. While it is true that women historically had a smaller presence in the field of musical composition compared to their male counterparts, this disparity was primarily rooted in the social circumstances of the past.

During the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a time of enlightenment and the flourishing of musical greatness, women faced significant barriers. They were often denied the education and support required to nurture individual artistic expression beyond domestic music-making. Despite these challenges, there were exceptionally gifted women who managed to overcome societal hurdles and prove their composition prowess. Notably, many of these women came from affluent middle and upper-class backgrounds or hailed from musical families that provided them with comprehensive training.

The compilation presented here showcases the work of 19 female composers from eight different countries. While it may not be entirely comprehensive, limited as it is to the period from the eighteenth century to the present, and due to the absence of a systematic catalog of autographs and printed editions in various archives and libraries, this collection still stands as a significant and justifiable publication. Each piece within this selection speaks volumes for the incredible talent and determination of these women.

As society evolves and reevaluates its views and attitudes towards women, the future holds the promise that more women will pursue musical composition. This represents a positive shift towards greater inclusivity and recognition of female composers and their invaluable contributions to the world of music.
