Gibraltar SC-20BK 20" Black Lacquer Kick Hoop

A bass drum hoop is one of those parts you barely think about until the original gets cracked, warped, battered by a pedal clamp or generally starts looking like it's survived several decades of pub gigs. The Gibraltar SC-20BK 20" Black Lacquer Bass Drum Hoop is a proper wooden replacement for getting a 20" kick back into fighting form.

Rather than using metal or a lightweight composite construction, Gibraltar builds the SC-20BK from eight plies of maple. That gives the hoop the rigidity required to hold the bass drum head securely while providing the traditional look and feel you'd expect from a quality wooden kick drum hoop.

The profile is designed specifically for bass drum duty. One edge sits flat against the collar of the drumhead, while the opposite edge is rounded to accommodate standard bass drum tension claws. It's a straightforward detail, but an important one when you're rebuilding a kick rather than simply buying a large wooden circle and hoping for the best.

At approximately 1¾" deep, the hoop has plenty of substance, while the high-gloss black lacquer finish gives it a clean, classic appearance that'll sit comfortably alongside a huge range of drum finishes. It's ideal for replacing a damaged hoop, refreshing a tired bass drum or keeping around as a spare for a heavily gigged kit.

It's worth noting that the SC-20BK is supplied as one individual hoop, rather than a pair. So if both batter and resonant hoops have seen better days, you'll want two.

Not the most glamorous drum purchase you'll ever make, perhaps – but when your old hoop has developed the structural integrity of a digestive biscuit, a solid eight-ply maple replacement suddenly becomes very exciting indeed.
