Some drum kits whisper tasteful sophistication. The Tama Starclassic Walnut/Birch 3-Piece Kit in Red Oyster looks more like it should be sitting under stage lights while somebody counts in a song far louder than originally discussed at rehearsal.

And that's exactly where a Starclassic belongs. Tama's Walnut/Birch hybrid shells combine the focused, articulate attack associated with birch with the warmth and fuller low-mid character of walnut. The result is a kit with plenty of definition when you're digging in, but enough body and resonance to sound wonderfully musical when played dynamically. It's equally happy being miked up in the studio or asked to make itself known across a busy live mix.

This compact three-piece configuration is particularly tasty: a 20" x 14" bass drum, 12" x 8" rack tom and 14" x 14" floor tom. That shallower 20" kick is wonderfully manageable on smaller stages while still delivering proper low-end punch, and the 12/14 tom combination gives you a beautifully balanced spread without surrounding the drummer in an unnecessary fortress of shells.

The tom shells use Tama's 6mm, 6-ply Walnut/Birch construction, combining four outer plies of birch with two inner plies of American Black Walnut. The bass drum steps up to a 7-ply, 8mm shell, giving the kick additional authority and projection. It's a combination designed around clarity, punch and warmth rather than simply making everything louder.

Tama's die-cast zinc hoops help focus the tom response and provide a crisp, solid attack, while the rack tom benefits from the Star-Cast mounting system, allowing it to resonate freely without unnecessary hardware clamped around the shell. The 14" floor tom gets Tama's clever Air-Cushioned rubber feet, designed to reduce vibration transfer into the floor and help preserve resonance.

The kit also includes an MTH1000S single tom holder, and the 20" bass drum is drilled for mounting it directly on the kick. It's a compact, practical configuration that can go from jazz and soul through funk, pop and rock without feeling like you've brought either too much drum kit or not enough.

Then there's that Red Oyster Duracover wrap. Classic, bold and gloriously retro without looking like somebody dragged it out of a damp ballroom in 1963. Add the chrome hardware and you've got a Starclassic that's every bit as handsome as it is serious.
