The History Of The Gibson Les Paul
The Guitar That Changed Rock 'n' Roll Forever

There are iconic guitars. Then there is the Gibson Les Paul.
For more than seventy years, the Les Paul has inspired generations of musicians, shaped entire genres of music and become one of the most recognisable electric guitars ever built. From smoky blues clubs and packed stadiums to recording studios and bedroom practice sessions, its unmistakable voice has appeared on thousands of recordings and in the hands of some of the greatest guitarists who have ever lived.
Yet what makes the Les Paul truly remarkable isn't simply its history. It's the fact that it continues to evolve.
Today, whether you're picking up your very first Epiphone Les Paul Melody Maker, chasing vintage perfection with a 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue, or investing in the beautifully modern Gibson Les Paul Studio Session, every Les Paul carries a little piece of that extraordinary legacy.
So how did one guitar become the benchmark by which almost every other electric guitar is judged?
Let's start at the beginning.
The Birth Of A Legend
Les Paul Meets Gibson
The story begins long before the first Les Paul ever reached a music shop. During the 1940s, guitarist, inventor and recording pioneer Les Paul believed electric guitars could sustain longer, reduce unwanted feedback and unlock entirely new musical possibilities.
His famous experimental instrument, nicknamed "The Log," was little more than a length of timber fitted with pickups and attached to sections of a hollow guitar body. It looked unusual, but it proved something revolutionary. Solid-body electric guitars worked.
When Gibson partnered with Les Paul in the early 1950s, the result was the 1952 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop, combining elegant craftsmanship with groundbreaking engineering.
Nobody realised it at the time.
But music had changed forever.

The Golden Years
Goldtops, PAFs & The Burst
As the 1950s progressed, the Les Paul evolved rapidly.
The iconic Goldtop gave way to richer finishes, improved hardware and, perhaps most importantly, one of the greatest inventions in guitar history.
In 1957, Gibson engineer Seth Lover introduced the Patent Applied For humbucker, now affectionately known simply as the PAF.
Quiet. Powerful. Warm. Rich.
Its influence cannot be overstated.
Just a year later, Gibson unveiled the now mythical Sunburst Les Paul Standard.
Built between 1958 and 1960, these guitars—known simply as Bursts—would eventually become the most desirable electric guitars ever produced.
Some now sell for hundreds of thousands of euro.
Others... For millions.
If you've ever dreamed of owning a piece of that golden era without remortgaging the house, the Epiphone 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue – Royal Teaburst captures much of that spirit. Built in collaboration with Gibson Custom, it faithfully recreates one of the most celebrated periods in Les Paul history, right down to the classic late-'50s feel, vintage-inspired electronics and unmistakable Burst aesthetics.
The Players Who Made The Myth
Great guitars need great musicians.
Fortunately... The Les Paul found plenty.
Eric Clapton used one to ignite the British blues boom.
Jimmy Page built Led Zeppelin's legendary sound around it.
Peter Green, Gary Moore, Slash, Joe Perry, Billy Gibbons, Joe Bonamassa, Randy Rhoads, Ace Frehley... The list is almost endless.
Every player approached the instrument differently.
Every one somehow still sounded unmistakably like a Les Paul.
Warm cleans. Singing sustain. Crunch that practically invented classic rock.
Few guitars have proven so adaptable across blues, rock, jazz, country, punk, indie and metal.

Simplicity Never Goes Out Of Style
Not every legendary Les Paul has been dripping with luxury.
Sometimes... Less is more.
The Les Paul Junior, introduced in 1954, stripped the concept back to its essentials.
- One pickup.
- One volume.
- One tone.
- A slab of mahogany.
Nothing else.
The result? One of the rawest, most direct rock guitars ever created.
Today, guitars like the Epiphone Les Paul Junior TV Yellow, the Epiphone Les Paul Junior Double Cut Ebony, the Gibson Les Paul Special Vintage Cherry and the Gibson Les Paul Special Double Cutaway Vintage Cherry continue that wonderfully uncomplicated philosophy.
Plug in. Turn up.
Play.

Bringing The Les Paul To Everyone
One of the reasons the Les Paul remains so beloved is that it exists at almost every level.
Not every player begins with a Custom Shop Gibson. Nor should they have to. That's where Epiphone has played such an important role.
For generations, Epiphone has introduced millions of musicians to the Les Paul experience, delivering remarkable craftsmanship and authentic Gibson DNA at prices that make owning a Les Paul possible for almost anyone.
The cheerful Epiphone Les Paul Melody Maker, available in Sunset Yellow, Turquoise and Vintage Sunburst, perfectly captures that philosophy. Fun, lightweight and wonderfully approachable, they're fantastic first electric guitars that still deliver genuine Les Paul character.
Every legend has to begin somewhere.

The Modern Les Paul
One of Gibson's greatest achievements has been knowing when to respect tradition...
...and when to improve it.
Today's Les Pauls offer locking tuners, modern neck profiles, weight relief, compound switching systems and premium electronics while never losing sight of the qualities that made the originals famous. The recently announced Gibson Les Paul Studio Session Honey Burst is a wonderful example.
- Classic '57 pickups.
- Ultra Modern weight relief.
- Coil splitting.
- Phase switching.
- Pure Bypass.
It's unmistakably a Les Paul. Just one built for the twenty-first century.
Likewise, models such as the Epiphone Les Paul Standard '50s in Inverness Green, the Left-Handed Standard '50s Figured Washed Cherry Sunburst and the beautifully appointed Les Paul Custom Figured Heritage Cherry Sunburst demonstrate just how faithfully modern Epiphone instruments continue to honour Gibson's legendary designs while adding incredible value.
