If you’re ready to move beyond the basic beginner whistle and want something with more body, projection and proper tuning adjustment, the Tony Dixon DX006D Tuneable Aluminium Soprano Whistle in D is a seriously lovely bit of kit. It combines Dixon’s comfortable ABS head with a more substantial aluminium body, resulting in a whistle that feels reassuringly solid and produces a bright, full and powerful tone.

The aluminium construction is a big part of the DX006D’s personality. Its thicker walls create deeper tone-hole chimneys, helping produce the fatter, louder sound associated with Dixon’s aluminium whistles. That extra projection makes it a particularly tasty choice for traditional Irish sessions, where your beautiful delicate melody occasionally has to compete with three fiddles, a box player and somebody absolutely murdering a bodhrán.

Crucially, the DX006D is tuneable. The ABS head moves along an internal solid nickel tuning slide fixed into the aluminium body, allowing you to fine-tune the pitch when playing alongside other musicians. That's a very useful step up from a fixed-pitch beginner whistle, particularly for sessions, ensemble playing and recording.

Being a Soprano / High D whistle, it's in the standard key used throughout Irish traditional music and uses familiar D-whistle fingering. It's equally happy tackling jigs, reels, polkas, airs and whatever tune somebody launches into at terrifying speed before you've had a chance to ask what key they're in.
