If you love the sound and simplicity of the traditional whistle but fancy heading into deeper, richer territory, the Tony Dixon DX107G Tuneable Aluminium Alto Whistle in G is a beauty. Sitting below the familiar high-D soprano whistle, the Alto G produces a fuller, warmer voice while retaining enough brightness and projection to hold its own in a proper Irish trad session.

The substantial aluminium body is a big part of the DX107G's character. Tony Dixon specifically describes the DX107 series as having a bright tone, and the thicker-walled aluminium construction gives the instrument a stronger, more substantial sound than Dixon's softer polymer-bodied whistles. You get lovely depth in the lower register, but there's still enough presence and clarity for quicker tunes and ensemble playing.

It's also fully tuneable, with an ABS head and aluminium tuning section allowing you to make small pitch adjustments when playing alongside other instruments. That's particularly useful in sessions, ensembles and recording situations where being nearly in tune isn't going to cut the mustard.

Being in the key of G gives this whistle a wonderfully different personality from the ubiquitous high D. The larger body and wider finger spacing naturally require a bit more reach, but in return you get that gorgeous, rounded lower-register voice that works beautifully for airs, slower melodies and expressive traditional playing, while still having enough attack for reels, jigs and session tunes.

The DX107G measures approximately 432mm long, with an outer tube diameter of around 19.8mm, so it's substantially more compact and manageable than a full Low D while still providing plenty of that satisfying lower-whistle character. It's a cracking middle ground for players looking to expand beyond soprano whistles.
