Boss DS1 Distortion Pedal
The Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal isn’t just a classic — it’s the distortion pedal for a lot of players. Introduced back in 1978, it was one of the first compact distortion pedals to really nail a usable, affordable high-gain sound, and it’s been a staple on pedalboards ever since.
What made the DS-1 stand out then — and still does now — is how accessible it is. You didn’t need a cranked amp or a complicated setup to get a proper distorted tone. Plug in, step on it, and you were there. That simplicity is a big part of why it took off so quickly.
Over the years, it’s ended up in the rigs of some seriously influential players. Kurt Cobain used it to shape that raw, cutting grunge sound. Steve Vai had one in his early setups. Joe Satriani too. It’s one of those pedals that crosses genres effortlessly — rock, punk, metal, alternative — it’s been everywhere.
Tonally, it carved out its own space early on. Instead of being overly thick or fuzzy, the DS-1 has that tight low end and sharp, biting top, which helps it cut through a mix. That’s why it works so well in a band setting — it doesn’t get lost.
And the thing is, it hasn’t really changed. Boss got it right the first time, and the design has stayed remarkably consistent. Same three-knob layout, same rugged enclosure, same instantly recognisable sound.
There’s also something to be said for how it ages with you as a player. It’s often someone’s first distortion pedal, but it’s rarely their last. Even players with massive pedalboards tend to keep a DS-1 around — because it just does that one thing so well.
At Musicmaker, it’s one of those pedals we never hesitate to recommend. Not because it’s flashy or new — but because it’s proven, and still earning its place decades later.
