Evans EMAD Clear Bass Drum Head - 18"

A good bass drum head should give you the sound you want before you've covered half the drum in pillows, blankets and suspicious bits of gaffer tape. The Evans EMAD Clear 18" Bass Drum Head is built around exactly that idea, combining a punchy single-ply head with Evans' brilliantly simple Externally Mounted Adjustable Damping system.

The foundation is a 10mil clear film, giving the EMAD a strong attack, plenty of low-end response and a lively feel beneath the pedal. On an 18" kick, that's a particularly tasty combination: you can retain the compact drum's natural character while adding the focus and controlled punch that has made EMAD heads such a familiar sight on stages and in studios.

The clever bit, of course, is that EMAD damping system. Around the outside of the head sits a removable damping sleeve, allowing you to alter the amount of overtone control without taking the head off the drum. Evans supplies two interchangeable foam damping rings, so you can choose between different levels of control depending on the drum, room and sound you're chasing.

Want a little more openness and resonance? Use the narrower ring. Need something tighter, shorter and more focused? Pop in the wider one. It's considerably more civilised than repeatedly removing the front head to rearrange the cushion inside your kick while the rest of the band watches.

Evans also uses its Level 360 collar technology, designed to help the head sit evenly around the bearing edge and make tuning more straightforward. That's especially useful when you're trying to get the most from a smaller bass drum, where small tuning changes can make a surprisingly large difference.

The 18" EMAD Clear is a cracking choice for compact kits, jazz-sized setups and players using an 18" bass drum who want more attack, low-end focus and easily adjustable damping without completely choking the life out of the drum.
