Tension rods are tiny, inexpensive and spectacularly easy to ignore right up until one gets bent, stripped, rusted solid or mysteriously vanishes during a head change. The Gibraltar SC-4C Tension Rods are a handy six-pack of replacement rods for getting compatible snares and toms back into tune without replacing perfectly good hardware around them.
Each SC-4C measures 1-5/8" (42mm) and uses Gibraltar's current specified 7/32"-24 thread. That makes them suitable for many snare drums plus small and medium-sized toms, although tension-rod standards aren't universal – measuring the rod you're replacing before ordering is considerably easier than discovering the difference with the drum dismantled on the kitchen table.
They're conventional drum-key tension rods, so they'll work with a standard drum key for tuning and head changes. Washers are included too, meaning you've got the basic hardware required to replace tired rods and get the hoop tensioned properly again.
A fresh set can make a surprising difference to an older drum from a maintenance point of view. Rusty or damaged tension rods can make tuning feel inconsistent and unnecessarily awkward; replacing them gives you clean threads and smooth adjustment so you can spend more time listening to the drum and less time wrestling with hardware that hasn't moved willingly since 2007.
Six in a pack also makes the SC-4C useful workshop or gig-bag stock. You may not need one today, but the drummer who has a spare tension rod when somebody else's snaps before soundcheck becomes an extremely popular person extremely quickly.
