If you’re the kind of bassist who hears “1x15” and immediately starts thinking big, warm, room-filling low end, the Ashdown UK-SBM-115-500 Studio 1 x 15" 500W Bass Magnifier Combo should be very much on your radar. This UK-built heavyweight in tone – thankfully not in actual weight – takes the portability of Ashdown’s Studio range and gives it considerably more firepower.

At its heart is a premium 15" Sica NEO speaker, paired with an Eminence tweeter for extra definition and detail up top. The result is exactly what you’d hope for from a great 1x15: deep, rounded lows and smooth mids, but with enough clarity to stop everything turning into low-frequency soup. Fingerstyle, pick, slap, vintage thump or modern attack – there’s plenty of range here.

And there’s an important detail with the power rating: the combo delivers 250 watts through its internal speaker, expanding to the full 500 watts when you connect an additional 8-ohm cabinet. That makes it brilliantly flexible. Use it on its own for rehearsals and plenty of everyday gigs, then add another cab when you need more output, greater stage coverage and the full 500-watt wallop.

Ashdown gives you plenty of control over all that power with a familiar 5-band EQ, covering Bass, Lo-Mid, Middle, Hi-Mid and Treble. There's also a Pre-Shape switch for quickly dropping into a ready-made Ashdown contour, while Pre-Gain and Master Volume controls make it easy to match the amp to your instrument and playing environment.

Things get grittier courtesy of the tube-emulated Drive circuit. You can use it for a touch of warmth and harmonic texture or push things towards a much dirtier bass growl. Better still, the Drive can be switched remotely using an optional Ashdown FS-1 footswitch, making it genuinely useful as a second flavour during a gig.

Connectivity is properly sorted too, with a balanced XLR DI output, FX Loop, Line Input and headphone output. Plugging in headphones mutes the speaker for quiet practice, while dedicated Tweeter and Speaker Mute switches give you further control over the combo's output.

Then there’s the construction. The UK-SBM-115-500 is built in the UK, finished in Charcoal Tweed with a Silver Weave grille and Ice Blue control panel, and despite the 15" speaker and serious power section, weighs only around 16.5kg. That's impressively manageable for a bass combo capable of delivering this much grunt.

At Musicmaker, this is exactly the sort of amp we love seeing: big enough to become the heart of a proper live rig, flexible enough for recording and rehearsal, yet portable enough that you won't develop a personal grudge against it halfway up the venue stairs.
