Avalon Guitars L311 Iroko/Cedar

The Avalon L311 Iroko/Cedar begins with a piece of timber that should never have become a guitar at all.

Long before it entered Avalon’s Northern Irish workshop, the iroko used for this instrument lived another life entirely — as an old table sitting at the centre of a hidden drinking den and brothel somewhere in Northern Ireland. Years later, the building changed hands and became something very different: a church-led community space helping people through addiction recovery and personal rebuilding. The same table that once witnessed excess and collapse eventually stood in a place centred on restoration.

When the time finally came to dispose of it, the owners chose not to throw the timber away. Instead, it found its way to Avalon.

What followed was not straightforward.

The old iroko — often called African Teak — had become brutally dry, unstable, and stubborn after decades of use and age. It shattered blades, resisted shaping, and tested the patience of everyone in the workshop. Eventually, the luthiers gave it a nickname: “Bastard” Teak. Part frustration, part admiration. A difficult wood with too much history in it to behave politely.

And yet, beneath all that resistance, something remarkable waited.

From that old table, Avalon created only three guitars.

The L311 is one of them.

There is something fitting about the voice of this instrument. The Cedar top gives the guitar warmth and immediacy, responding effortlessly to touch with a mature, open character that feels intimate rather than aggressive. But behind that warmth sits the iroko itself — dense, dry, and articulate, bringing remarkable clarity, woody midrange detail, and a focused low-end that gives the guitar unusual presence and separation.

The sound feels seasoned. Lived-in. Not manufactured into perfection, but shaped by material with genuine age and memory behind it.

This is exactly where Avalon’s approach matters most.

In a world increasingly obsessed with uniformity, Avalon still builds guitars by hand, one at a time, guided by listening rather than repetition. Every top is voiced individually. Every brace carved with intent. Every piece of timber approached on its own terms. There are no templates for wood like this because no two pieces carry the same history.

Visually, the L311 carries understated elegance rather than excess. The natural complexity of the iroko provides movement and texture throughout the body, complemented beautifully by the warmth of the cedar top. The craftsmanship remains refined and deliberate, allowing the story of the timber itself to remain at the centre of the instrument.

And perhaps that is what makes this guitar feel different from almost anything else Avalon has built.

The Fishman Ellipse Blend pickup system deserves special mention here because it suits the character of the L311 beautifully. Rather than flattening or sterilising the guitar’s natural voice, the Ellipse Blend preserves the warmth, woody detail, and dynamic nuance that make this instrument so distinctive acoustically. By combining an undersaddle pickup with an internal microphone, it captures both the direct articulation of the strings and the natural air and resonance of the body itself.

At Musicmaker, guitars like the Avalon L311 remind us that the greatest instruments are not always the cleanest or most predictable. Sometimes the most powerful voices come from wood that has already lived a life long before the first note was ever played.
