The Avalon S35 Performer Series Rosewood/Cedar Nylon approaches the classical guitar from a very different place than most modern nylon-string instruments. It is not built to imitate tradition superficially or chase sterile perfection. Instead, it feels deeply rooted in the idea that a great classical guitar should breathe, respond, and interact with the player almost conversationally.

There is a softness to the attack here, a clarity. The first thing you notice is the immediacy of the Cedar top — warm, expressive, and astonishingly sensitive beneath the fingers. Very little effort is required to draw tone from this guitar, yet the reward is enormous: rich harmonic colour, lyrical sustain, and an intimacy that makes even simple passages feel emotionally weighted.

The Indian Rosewood back and sides bring structure and depth to that warmth. Notes remain beautifully defined, with impressive separation across complex chord voicings and a rounded low-end that never overwhelms the midrange. The smaller S body shape gives the instrument a remarkably focused and balanced response, making it especially rewarding for fingerstyle players, contemporary classical performers, composers, and players working dynamically in recording environments.

In the Northern Irish workshop, these guitars are still made entirely by hand, one at a time, by luthiers who understand that the smallest adjustments shape the final voice of the instrument. Every brace, thickness, and contour exists for tonal reasons first. Nothing is hurried. Nothing is arbitrary. The result is a nylon-string guitar that feels composed rather than manufactured.

Visually, the S35 carries quiet sophistication throughout. The rosewood bindings frame the body naturally, while the ebony fingerboard, bridge, and headplate create contrast and elegance without excess. The solid Paua Abalone rosette adds subtle colour and depth around the soundhole, balanced perfectly by the understated Mother of Pearl Avalon logo.

The Brazilian Mahogany neck feels smooth, stable, and reassuringly traditional in the hand, while the Schaller Grand Tune Hauser classical machine heads offer exceptional precision and tuning stability. Paired with Dogal Mistralle High Tension strings, the guitar delivers excellent projection, clarity, and responsiveness across the entire fingerboard.

Plugged in, the LR Baggs Anthem system captures the natural acoustic voice of the instrument remarkably well, preserving the warmth, articulation, and dynamic sensitivity that define the S35 acoustically.

This is not a nylon-string guitar designed for casual background playing. It is an instrument for players who care deeply about touch, nuance, phrasing, and the physical connection between hands and sound.
