Tiny bass amps are usually a bit of a novelty. The Ashdown Studio-4 Bass Combo Amp is considerably more useful than that. Packing a 3-watt bass amp, 4" speaker, rechargeable battery and wireless audio streaming into a box weighing just 1kg, it's designed for those moments when you want to practise without dragging the main rig into the equation.

Despite its miniature dimensions, Ashdown has given the Studio-4 a proper 3-band EQ, with dedicated Bass, Middle and Treble controls for shaping your sound. It's obviously not here to compete with a full-sized stage amp, but for practising riffs, warming up before a gig, teaching or simply keeping beside the sofa, it's an incredibly handy little companion.

Wireless audio streaming makes practice particularly easy. Fire up a track on your compatible device and play along directly through the amp, or use the Line Input for a wired connection. There's also a headphone output when even three watts is three watts too many for everyone else in the house.

The really clever bit is the rechargeable 9V battery, freeing you from the wall socket and making the Studio-4 properly portable. At just 160 x 160 x 100mm, it'll happily travel with you without demanding half the boot of the car. There's even an extension output if you want to connect to a larger speaker cabinet.
