Five watts doesn't sound like much until those five watts are coming from a proper EL84 valve power stage and a 12" Celestion speaker. The Ashdown SX-5C Guitar Combo is a compact all-valve amp built for players who want genuine valve warmth, touch sensitivity and natural breakup without needing a monster stack shaking the windows out of the house.

At the heart of the SX-5C is a beautifully simple valve configuration: one JJ Electronics ECC83S in the preamp and one JJ Electronics EL84 in the power stage. That gives you the responsive character you'd expect from a classic small valve amp – play gently and it'll clean up nicely; dig in or push things harder and that lovely harmonic grit begins creeping into the sound.

The single-channel design keeps everything refreshingly straightforward, with Bass, Middle and Treble EQ plus Master Volume for shaping your core sound. A genuine Accutronics reverb block adds space and ambience, while the 12" Celestion speaker gives those five watts considerably more size and authority than you'd expect from a small practice combo.

One of the cleverest features is Ashdown's Stealth switch, which reduces the overall volume while activating speaker tone compensation. That means you can get into those satisfying valve sounds at more manageable levels – very handy for home playing and recording when turning an EL84 loose isn't socially advisable.

And the SX-5C is remarkably well equipped for the studio. There's a speaker-emulated Recording Out voiced to simulate the response of a Celestion Alnico speaker, plus a Speaker Mute switch for silent recording. A series effects loop gives your delays, reverbs and modulation pedals somewhere sensible to live, while 8Ω and 16Ω speaker outputs let you hook the amp up to compatible external cabinets.
