Traditional Irish Wooden Bones - Cocuswood

Traditional Irish Wooden Bones - Cocuswood

Authentic rhythm with rich tone and traditional feel. The Traditional Irish Wooden Bones made from Cocuswood are a classic rhythm instrument deeply rooted in Irish traditional music. Simple in design yet endlessly expressive, bones add a lively, percussive pulse that lifts sessions, dances and performances with unmistakable trad character.

Cocuswood is prized for its density, strength and natural resonance, making it an excellent choice for bones. The result is a crisp, articulate clack with plenty of volume and definition, cutting through a session without ever sounding harsh. Compared to lighter woods, cocuswood offers a slightly brighter response and a satisfying weight in the hand, giving players excellent control over dynamics and articulation.

Comfortable to hold and responsive to subtle movement, these bones suit both beginners learning basic rolls and experienced players looking for speed, bounce and rhythmic nuance. Whether you’re backing reels and jigs, adding texture to slow airs, or driving a lively set, they respond beautifully to changes in tempo and technique.

A staple of Irish traditional percussion, wooden bones are often played alongside fiddles, flutes, whistles and pipes — and this cocuswood set delivers an authentic sound that feels right at home in any session. They’re a favourite recommendation at Musicmaker when someone wants to explore trad rhythm beyond bodhrán, or add something genuinely traditional to their setup.
