A good DI box is one of those bits of kit you don't think much about until you really need one – and then suddenly it's the most important box on the stage. The LD Systems LDI 02 Active DI Box is a rugged, straightforward solution for getting instruments and other audio sources into a mixer, PA system or recording setup with a clean, balanced signal.

The active circuitry and 1MΩ input impedance make the LDI 02 particularly useful with instruments such as electric and acoustic guitars, basses and keyboards. It converts your signal into a balanced, low-impedance output that's far happier travelling over long cable runs, making it a seriously handy tool for both live and studio setups.

Connectivity is nicely flexible, with 6.3mm jack and XLR inputs, a balanced XLR output, plus a THRU output for sending your original signal onwards. That means you can, for example, send a bass to your amplifier while simultaneously feeding a balanced DI signal to the mixing desk – simple and incredibly useful.

There's also a Ground Lift switch for tackling troublesome hum and ground-loop noise. Power comes from either +48V phantom power supplied by your mixing desk or a standard 9V battery. When phantom power is present, the internal battery is automatically switched off, helping preserve battery life.

Built into a sturdy metal enclosure with protective corners, the LDI 02 is very much designed to be thrown into gig bags, cable cases and stage boxes without being treated like fine china.
