Planet Waves Varigrip Adjustable Hand Exerciser
Planet Waves Varigrip Adjustable Hand Exerciser
The Planet Waves Varigrip Adjustable Hand Exerciser is one of those tools that quietly makes a massive difference to your playing. It’s not flashy, but give it a bit of time in your routine and you’ll feel the results where it matters — strength, control and endurance.
What sets the Varigrip apart is the adjustable tension for each finger. Instead of treating your hand as one unit, you can actually dial in resistance individually — which is huge for guitarists. You can target weaker fingers, build independence, and work on balance across your hand in a really focused way.
It’s just as useful off the instrument as it is alongside your practice. Sitting on the couch, travelling, backstage — it’s an easy way to keep your hands active and improving without needing to pick up the guitar. And because it’s compact, it lives happily in a gig bag or case pocket.
A really nice touch is the removable, reversible grip, which reveals a simulated string surface underneath. That means you can work on finger strength and callus development in a way that actually relates to playing — not just squeezing a spring for the sake of it.
Build quality is solid, as you’d expect from D’Addario/Planet Waves, and it feels comfortable in the hand even during longer sessions.
At Musicmaker, this is something we often recommend to players who feel like they’ve hit a bit of a plateau — sometimes it’s not about learning more, it’s about giving your hands the tools to keep up.
