Sometimes the best bass is the one that keeps things simple. The Sire Marcus Miller V3P 4-String Passive Bass – Orange takes the familiar Jazz-style formula, adds the excellent neck treatment and hardware Sire has become known for, and leaves the batteries and onboard EQ at home. The result is a straightforward, seriously playable bass with plenty of tonal range – and an Orange finish that's anything but shy.

The mahogany body gives the V3P a warm, full foundation, paired with a hard maple neck and rosewood fingerboard for a comfortable, familiar feel. Sire's brilliant Edgeless™ fingerboard treatment rolls the fingerboard edges, helping the neck feel smooth and played-in rather than sharp and box-fresh.

With its 34" scale length, 38mm bone nut and comfortable C-shaped neck profile, this is very much classic J-style territory. The narrower nut makes it particularly comfortable for quicker lines and players who prefer a slimmer feel at the lower frets, while 20mm bridge string spacing leaves plenty of room for fingerstyle, slap and pick playing.

A pair of Marcus Standard-J Revolution pickups handles the business end of things. The passive electronics couldn't be easier to understand: you get an individual Volume control for each pickup plus a Master Tone. Blend both pickups for that familiar balanced J-style sound, favour the neck pickup for something warmer and rounder, or bring the bridge pickup forward when you want extra definition and midrange bite.

There's no battery to worry about, no active EQ to navigate and very little standing between your hands and your amp. It's a brilliant option for beginners who want a quality first bass, but there's enough playability and tonal flexibility here for experienced players after a dependable passive workhorse too.

And then there's that Orange finish with black pickguard and chrome hardware. Subtle? Not particularly. Excellent? Absolutely.
