If you're after that classic J-style bass feel without active electronics, batteries or a control panel that looks like a mixing desk, the Sire Marcus Miller V1 Series 4-String Passive Bass – Black keeps things beautifully straightforward. It's a proper no-nonsense bass: two pickups, three controls, a comfortable neck and plenty of usable tone.

The V1 starts with a mahogany body, giving the bass a warm, solid tonal foundation. That's paired with a hard maple neck and rosewood fingerboard, while Sire's excellent Edgeless™ rolled fingerboard edges give the neck a smoother, more broken-in feel straight out of the box. It's one of those little details that makes a surprisingly big difference when you're playing for a few hours.

The dimensions stay firmly in familiar J-bass territory. You get a 34" scale length, slim 38mm bone nut, comfortable C-shaped neck and 9.5" fingerboard radius. There are also 22 medium frets, giving you a little extra range up top compared with many traditional J-style designs.

A pair of Sire Basic J pickups handles the sound, with completely passive electronics consisting of Volume for the neck pickup, Volume for the bridge pickup and a Master Tone. Blend both pickups for that balanced J-style character, favour the neck for warmer and rounder sounds, or lean towards the bridge when you want more midrange definition and bite.

The hardware follows the same uncomplicated approach, with a Sire Basic Bass Bridge, 20mm string spacing and open-gear tuners. Finished in classic Black with a matching black three-ply pickguard and chrome hardware, it has a timeless look that'll happily fit into just about any band.
