If standard 10–46s feel great up top but you occasionally wish the bottom end had just a little more beef, the Ernie Ball 2227 Ultra Slinky Electric Guitar Strings (.010–.048) are a very clever solution. They keep the familiar easy-playing feel of a .010 set on the treble side while adding heavier wound strings for more authority when you're digging into riffs and chords.
The Ultra Slinky gauges are .010, .013, .017, .028, .038 and .048. Compared with Ernie Ball's Regular Slinky 10–46 set, that means the plain strings stay familiar while the wound side gets progressively chunkier. It's a cracking combination for players who want comfortable bends and lead work without the low strings feeling too loose beneath a heavy picking hand.
Construction follows the classic Ernie Ball Slinky recipe. The wound strings use nickel-plated steel wrapped around tin-plated hex-shaped steel cores, while the plain strings are made from specially tempered tin-plated high-carbon steel. The result is the bright, balanced response and familiar Slinky feel that has made these strings such an electric-guitar staple.
That slightly heavier bottom end makes the Ultra Slinkys particularly tasty for rock, alternative, blues, punk and riff-heavy playing. There's extra substance behind power chords and rhythm parts, but you haven't sacrificed the .010, .013 and .017 treble strings when it's time to start bending notes.
