Ashdown The Saint Bass Guitar takes a beautifully direct approach: a classic P/J pickup configuration, passive controls, a full 34-inch scale and a roasted maple neck and fingerboard, all wrapped up in Ashdown's distinctive offset-inspired design. It's the sort of bass that feels familiar immediately but still has enough personality to stand apart.

Ashdown may be best known for bass amplification, but The Saint shows that the company's understanding of bass players extends well beyond amps. Its poplar body is shaped with balance and comfort in mind, making it an inviting instrument for long rehearsals, recording sessions and gigs. The distinctive silhouette brings a little vintage flavour without simply copying one of the usual suspects.

The roasted maple neck and roasted maple fingerboard are particularly welcome at this price point. That gives you a seriously useful spectrum of bass sounds: favour the P pickup for deep lows, muscular mids and old-school thump, bring up the J pickup for extra bite and definition, or blend the pair to find the sweet spot that works with your amp, band and playing style.

The electronics remain reassuringly old-school, with two Volume controls and a master Tone control. No batteries, menus or needless complications—just straightforward passive tone shaping that responds quickly when you need to make an adjustment mid-song. Ashdown also uses CTS-style potentiometers, complementing the hand-wound pickup approach and keeping the signal path simple and musical.

Vintage-style chrome machine heads and a matching painted headstock finish off a bass that's got bags of character without becoming flashy for the sake of it.
