Ashdown Triple Shot Multi-Band Bass Overdrive

Bass overdrive has always had one fundamental problem: add enough dirt to make things exciting and it's remarkably easy to lose the low-end weight that made your bass sound enormous in the first place. The Ashdown Triple Shot Multi-Band Bass Overdrive attacks that problem from a completely different angle, splitting your signal into three separate frequency bands and letting you decide exactly where the damage happens.

Those three bands are brilliantly named Dark, Medium and Light, covering the lows, mids and highs respectively. Rather than pushing your entire bass signal through a single distortion circuit, each band passes through its own dedicated distortion generator before everything is recombined at the output. In practical terms, that means you can keep the bottom end thick and controlled while absolutely roasting the mids, add aggressive distortion to the top without turning your lows to mush, or drive all three bands for a huge, layered wall of bass.

Each section gets its own Roast control, allowing you to balance the amount and character of drive across the frequency spectrum. Small adjustments can make a surprisingly dramatic difference, taking the Triple Shot from subtle grit and midrange emphasis through chunky low-frequency overdrive and all the way into aggressive, high-gain distortion. This isn't a one-flavour drive pedal with a tone knob tacked onto the end; it's a proper sound-design tool for bassists who like getting stuck into the details.

That multi-band approach is particularly useful in a band mix. Bass distortion can sound glorious in isolation but disappear remarkably quickly once drums and guitars arrive. Being able to decide which part of your signal gets driven gives you far more control over how the bass occupies its space, helping retain fundamental low-end while introducing the harmonic content and aggression needed to cut through.

And because this is Ashdown, there's a proper analogue VU meter staring back at you from the enclosure. Beyond looking undeniably cool, it provides useful visual feedback while you're setting levels and switching between instruments. It's a little piece of Ashdown DNA that makes the Triple Shot instantly recognisable on a pedalboard.

The whole thing is housed in a substantial road-ready chassis with standard ¼-inch input and output connections. Power comes from a 9V DC centre-negative supply, with the pedal drawing approximately 45mA, making it straightforward to integrate into most existing pedalboard power setups.

For bassists who regard "a bit more drive" as the beginning of the conversation rather than the end, the Ashdown Triple Shot is a seriously interesting beast. From a touch of grit around the mids to filthy, harmonically rich multi-band distortion, it gives you the freedom to get nasty without surrendering control of the frequencies that matter. Very civilised engineering for some decidedly uncivilised bass sounds.
