Ashdown UK-OBM-300 300w Bass Head
There’s something deeply appealing about a bass amp that doesn’t try to turn playing bass into a software engineering exercise. The Ashdown UK-OBM-300 300W Bass Head is all about clean power, straightforward tone shaping and proper portability, taking the stripped-back philosophy of Ashdown’s OriginAL lineage and bringing it home with a new UK-built design.
Delivering 300 watts of clean, punchy bass power, the UK-OBM-300 has plenty under the bonnet for rehearsals, recording sessions, club gigs and everyday live work. Ashdown has deliberately kept the signal path uncomplicated, allowing the character of your bass – and your fingers – to come through rather than burying everything beneath layers of processing.
Tone shaping comes courtesy of Ashdown’s familiar 5-band EQ, giving you dedicated control over Bass, Low Mid, Middle, High Mid and Treble frequencies. Each band offers a generous ±15dB of adjustment, so you can move from thick vintage warmth to articulate modern punch without needing an enormous graphic EQ staring back at you.
Then there’s Ashdown’s classic Pre-Shape circuit. Hit the button and you've got an instant sculpted bass sound with added low-end weight and upper-frequency definition – particularly handy when you need to find your place in a busy band mix without spending half of soundcheck fiddling with knobs.
Connectivity is sensibly gig-ready too. A balanced XLR DI output lets you send your bass directly to the PA or recording desk, while the effects loop gives your pedals somewhere sensible to live. Twin speaker outputs make cabinet connections straightforward, with the amp supporting a minimum 4-ohm load.
One of the biggest attractions, though, is portability. The UK-OBM-300 measures just 220mm wide and weighs around 2kg, meaning you've got a genuinely gig-capable 300-watt amplifier that isn't going to destroy your shoulder before you've even reached the venue. Auto-voltage 115–230V operation is another very welcome addition for travelling players.
And then there's that Ice Blue finish. Subtle it isn't, but we're rather glad Ashdown didn't make another anonymous little black box. Better still, the UK-OBM series is hand-built in Britain, bringing UK construction back to this wonderfully practical compact format.
At Musicmaker, this is exactly the kind of bass head we can get behind. It's powerful without being enormous, flexible without becoming complicated, and light enough that you won't immediately regret agreeing to play upstairs. 300 watts, five bands of EQ and proper Ashdown character in a box you can carry with one hand. Lovely stuff.
