Ernie Ball 2831 Power Slinky Heavy Bass Strings (.055-.110)
If your bass strings currently feel a bit too polite, the Ernie Ball 2831 Power Slinky Heavy Bass Strings (.055–.110) are here to put some muscle behind proceedings. These are the heaviest standard four-string Nickel Wound Slinkys in Ernie Ball's traditional Power Slinky line-up, giving you a firm, substantial feel with loads of punch and authority.
The gauges run .055, .075, .090 and .110, so there's noticeably more resistance beneath the fingers than you'll find with Regular or Hybrid Slinkys. That makes them particularly satisfying for bassists with a heavy attack, players who like their strings feeling tight and controlled, and anyone venturing into lower tunings where lighter strings can start getting a bit floppy.
In fact, Ernie Ball specifically recommends the 55–110 Power Slinky Bass set for D Standard and Drop C on a typical 34" scale bass, where the heavier gauges help maintain healthy playing tension. They're equally usable in standard tuning if you simply enjoy a seriously firm feel – although your fingers will certainly know they've been to work.
Construction is classic Ernie Ball. The strings use nickel-plated steel wrapped around hex-shaped steel core wire, producing the bright, balanced response associated with the Slinky family. There's plenty of definition for aggressive picking and riffing, with enough clarity to keep the low end from turning into an indistinct rumble when things get heavy.
At Musicmaker, we'd point the Power Slinkys towards bassists who look at a .105 E string and think, “That's grand, but have you got anything with a bit more fight?” The answer is yes. .110 on the bottom, .055 on top, and absolutely no messing about in between.
