Ernie Ball 2623 7-String Super Slinky Electric Strings (.009-.052)

Ernie Ball 2623 7-String Super Slinky Electric Strings (.009-.052)

If you want the extended range of a seven-string without making the guitar feel like it's been strung with suspension cables, the Ernie Ball 2623 Super Slinky 7-String Electric Guitar Strings (.009–.052) are right on the money. They take that famously slinky, easy-playing 9-gauge feel and add a .052 seventh string down below for all the extra low-end mischief.

The set runs .009, .011, .016, .024w, .032, .042 and .052, making it noticeably lighter under the fingers than Ernie Ball's Regular or Power Slinky seven-string sets. That means easier bends, a softer fretting feel and plenty of freedom for fast lead playing – particularly handy on an instrument where your left hand already has seven strings to worry about.

Interestingly, the .024 fourth string is wound, giving the set a smooth transition into the wound-string section while keeping those first three strings light and responsive.

Construction follows Ernie Ball's classic Slinky recipe, with nickel-plated steel wrap wire around tin-plated hex-shaped steel cores on the wound strings. The plain strings use specially tempered tin-plated high-carbon steel, producing the bright, balanced response that has made Slinkys such an electric-guitar staple.

And while seven-string guitars naturally lend themselves to metal, prog and other riff-heavy adventures, these aren't exclusively for downtuned brutality. The lighter gauge makes them equally tasty for technical lead work, big extended chords, fusion, experimental playing and anyone who simply likes having more notes available.

At Musicmaker, we'd point the 2623s towards the seven-string player who wants range without excessive resistance. Light on top, enough substance down below, and that familiar Super Slinky feel across the whole guitar. Seven strings are complicated enough – the string choice doesn't need to be.
