Alvarez ALJ2E Artist Series Little Jumbo Solid Top with Gigbag

ALJ2E Artist Little Jumbo with Gigbag | Alvarez | Musicmaker Dublin

A little jumbo with a lot to say. The Alvarez ALJ2E Artist Series Little Jumbo takes the rich, satisfying voice of a jumbo acoustic and squeezes it into a wonderfully comfortable, travel-friendly package. It's compact enough to bring along on your adventures, but there's nothing particularly shy about its sound. With a solid spruce top, mahogany back and sides, onboard electronics and an included gig bag, this is a cracking little all-rounder for players who like their acoustics portable without sacrificing musical personality.

The secret to the ALJ2E's lively voice is its solid Sitka spruce soundboard. Spruce is a wonderfully responsive tonewood, capable of delivering bright, articulate trebles, a warm midrange and plenty of dynamic range. Pair it with mahogany back and sides and you get a lovely balance of clarity and woody warmth. Fingerpicked melodies have a pleasing sweetness, while strummed chords ring out with a surprising amount of body for an instrument of this size. Small guitar, proper acoustic character.

Alvarez has put plenty of thought into what happens underneath that soundboard, too. The company's FST2 forward-shifted bracing is designed to encourage the top to vibrate freely, helping the guitar produce a more open, resonant voice. It's particularly useful on a compact instrument, where every bit of acoustic efficiency counts. The result is a guitar that feels lively under the fingers rather than one you have to wrestle sound out of.

The Little Jumbo body shape is a lovely middle ground between a traditional full-sized acoustic and a smaller travel guitar. Its rounded curves sit comfortably against the player, while the compact proportions make it especially appealing for younger musicians, players who find larger dreadnoughts cumbersome and anyone looking for a handy sofa guitar. And let's be fair, the best guitar for the sofa is often the one that gets played the most.

There's also a very practical side to this little Alvarez. The onboard pickup and preamp system lets you plug into an acoustic amplifier or PA, making it useful for open-mic nights, rehearsals and intimate performances. It's a great feature for a compact guitar, particularly if you're a singer-songwriter who wants one instrument for writing tunes at home and performing them out in the world.

The natural finish, tasteful appointments and classic Alvarez headstock give the ALJ2E a smart, understated appearance. A comfortable neck, quality tuning machines and Alvarez's distinctive bi-level bridge round out an instrument that feels thoughtfully designed rather than simply scaled down.

The Alvarez ALJ2E Little Jumbo is an excellent choice for travelling musicians, beginners looking for a quality solid-top acoustic and experienced players who fancy a compact electro-acoustic with a proper voice. Add the included gig bag and you've got a very tempting little musical companion. Just don't blame us when it starts coming everywhere with you.
