Remo 16" Controlled Sound Clear Black Dot
Remo 16" Controlled Sound Clear Black Dot
The Remo 16" Controlled Sound Clear Black Dot Drum Head is a serious powerhouse for drummers who want focused attack, added durability, and controlled resonance while still retaining the lively response of a single-ply head. Instantly recognisable thanks to its iconic black centre dot, this head has earned legendary status among players looking for extra punch and reliability without sacrificing feel or articulation.
Constructed from a single ply of clear film with Remo’s reinforced black dot applied to the centre, the Controlled Sound design creates two distinct tonal zones. Around the outer edge, the head remains open, resonant, and highly responsive. Strike directly on the black dot and the sound tightens noticeably, producing enhanced attack, reduced overtones, and added durability exactly where heavier playing demands it most.
On a 16" floor tom, this translates into huge low-end punch with controlled sustain and excellent stick definition. The clear finish adds brightness and articulation, helping the drum cut cleanly through live mixes while still delivering plenty of warmth and body underneath. Tuned low, it produces deep, thunderous floor tom tones with focused resonance. At medium tensions, it becomes punchy, articulate, and highly mix-friendly.
One of the reasons drummers continue to rely on Controlled Sound heads is their versatility. They’re capable of handling everything from aggressive rock and metal playing to funk, fusion, indie, and modern live setups while maintaining excellent responsiveness and tuning flexibility
At Musicmaker, the Controlled Sound Clear Black Dot remains a brilliant recommendation for drummers wanting classic Remo punch, enhanced durability, and a controlled modern floor tom sound that still feels alive under the sticks.
