Stringjoy Flyers 10-48 Balanced Light Gauge - Flatwound Stainless Electric
Flatwound strings have traditionally come with a bit of a trade-off: wonderfully smooth feel and warm tone, but sometimes at the expense of the sparkle and definition players expect from modern electric strings. Stringjoy Flyers 10-48 Balanced Light Flatwounds were designed specifically to mess with that assumption.
The Flyers use a premium stainless steel ribbon wrap over a hex core, giving the wound strings that unmistakably silky flatwound surface. Finger movement feels beautifully smooth, string noise is reduced, and slides up and down the neck become almost suspiciously pleasant. If your fingertips have spent years negotiating the ridges of roundwounds, the first encounter with a good set of flats can feel like somebody resurfaced the motorway overnight.
Tonally, Stringjoy has deliberately pushed these beyond the traditional dark-and-mellow flatwound stereotype. There's still the warm, rounded fundamental and controlled character players love flats for, but Flyers retain impressive high-end clarity and note definition. Chords remain articulate, individual notes speak clearly and the strings can handle considerably more than the jazz-box duties traditionally associated with flatwounds.
That makes them an interesting choice for jazz, indie, rock, folk, blues, clean electric work and driven tones alike. Roll the tone back and there's plenty of old-school warmth available; open things up and Flyers have enough presence to remain useful in a busy band mix. They're particularly worth investigating if you've tried traditional flatwounds before and loved the feel but wished they had a little more life upstairs.
Then there's Stringjoy's balanced-tension approach. This 10-48 set uses the slightly unusual combination of .010, .0135, .018w, .026, .036 and .048, rather than simply copying a conventional 10-46 set and flattening the windings. The gauges are selected to produce a more even response across the instrument, with the heavier bottom end giving chords and riffs a satisfyingly solid foundation.
And yes, that .018 third string is wound. That's an important little detail for players comparing these with ordinary electric 10s. It contributes to the consistent flatwound feel and tonal balance across the set, while giving the G string a distinctly smooth, substantial response.
Every set of Flyers is wound, inspected and packaged at Stringjoy's Nashville headquarters, following more than five years of development and testing behind the series.
For the flatwound faithful, these offer a fresh take on a familiar idea. For the flatwound-curious, they're an unusually approachable place to start. Smooth under the fingers, warm without becoming woolly, and bright enough that your guitar hasn't suddenly been transported to a jazz club in 1958.
