Stringjoy Flyers 11-50 Balanced Medium Gauge - Flatwound Stainless Electric
Stringjoy Flyers 11-50 Balanced Medium Gauge - Flatwound Stainless Electric
If the 10-48 Flyers are the friendly introduction to flatwounds, the Stringjoy Flyers 11-50 Balanced Medium set adds a little more authority to the conversation. You get the same beautifully smooth flatwound feel and warm, rounded voice, but with extra tension and substance for players who like their electric guitar strings to push back a bit.
Stringjoy developed the Flyers specifically to tackle one of the traditional complaints about flatwounds: they can feel fantastic but occasionally sound as though somebody has thrown a blanket over the amplifier. Flyers are designed differently, retaining the warm fundamental and silky response of a flatwound while preserving impressive clarity, presence and note definition.
Construction centres around a premium stainless steel ribbon wrap over a hex core. That flattened outer winding creates the wonderfully slick playing surface flatwound players love, reducing the ridged sensation and finger noise associated with conventional roundwound strings. Slides become beautifully smooth, position changes are quieter and the whole set has a distinctly polished feel beneath the fingers.
The Balanced Medium 11-50 gauges are .011, .014, .020w, .028, .038 and .050, with Stringjoy applying its balanced-tension philosophy across the set for a more even response from string to string. Compared with the lighter 10-48 Flyers, these offer a firmer feel and a little more resistance – particularly useful for players with a heavier picking hand or anyone who simply prefers the stability of 11s.
There's another important detail hiding in that gauge list: the .020 G string is wound. That helps maintain the smooth flatwound character across more of the set and gives the third string a fuller, more substantial feel and voice than the plain G found in many conventional electric sets.
And these aren't restricted to jazz. Absolutely, put them on a hollowbody, roll the tone back and they'll happily deliver warm, rounded chord work. But Stringjoy deliberately designed Flyers to cope with rock, indie, folk, clean sounds, driven amps and more experimental territory as well. They're flatwounds for players who like flatwounds – and also a very interesting proposition for players who previously decided they didn't.
Every Flyers string is wound, inspected and packaged at Stringjoy's headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee, following years of development and real-world testing.
At Musicmaker, we'd point the 11-50 set towards players who want that unmistakably smooth flatwound experience but prefer a little more meat beneath the fingers. Warm without disappearing, smooth without feeling lifeless, and substantial enough to reward a properly enthusiastic right hand.
