Roland FP-40-BK Digital Piano

A good digital piano should make you forget about menus, settings and technology for a while and just get on with playing the piano. The Roland FP-40-BK Digital Piano gets that balance beautifully right, combining Roland's latest Piano Reality sound technology, an excellent weighted 88-note keyboard and a genuinely useful collection of modern connectivity features in a slim, portable black instrument.

The business end is Roland's PHA-4 Standard keyboard, with fully weighted hammer action, escapement and Ivory Feel keys. It also uses triple-sensor detection, allowing the keyboard to respond accurately to repeated notes and subtle changes in touch. For beginners developing proper technique, experienced pianists who don't want to compromise on feel, or anybody somewhere in between, it's a very convincing playing experience.

Then there's the sound. The FP-40 uses Roland's Piano Reality Sound Engine, technology inspired by the company's flagship GP-series instruments. It combines premium sampling with modelling technologies to reproduce the little details that make an acoustic piano feel alive – natural decay, resonance and dynamic changes as you move from delicate playing to full-blooded chords.

You get 256-note polyphony and 305 onboard tones in total, with 40 sounds directly accessible from the piano and another 265 available through the Roland Piano App. Those immediately accessible sounds cover acoustic pianos, electric pianos, organs and other useful instruments, so there's plenty here beyond straightforward piano practice.

The built-in speaker system has had some attention too. A pair of 8 x 12cm speakers powered by 12 watts each provides enough body for home playing, lessons and practice, with an improved internal layout designed to produce greater clarity and richer low frequencies. When everybody else has heard enough scales for one evening, plug in headphones and Piano Reality Headphones Ambience provides an immersive private playing experience.

And this is where the FP-40 gets particularly interesting. There's Bluetooth 5.4 for audio and MIDI, USB-C audio/MIDI connectivity and even built-in Wi-Fi. The latter allows over-the-air updates and tighter integration with Roland's Piano Sphere learning platform, while the Roland Piano App opens up additional sounds and deeper piano customisation.

Despite all that technology, Roland hasn't turned the control panel into the flight deck of a small aircraft. The interface remains clean and approachable, while useful everyday functions including Dual, Split, Twin Piano, transpose, metronome and recording are ready when you need them.

At Musicmaker, this is exactly the sort of digital piano we like: serious enough that a developing pianist won't quickly outgrow it, but straightforward enough that you can sit down on day one and simply start playing. Add its relatively portable 14kg weight, proper stereo outputs and optional furniture-style stand and three-pedal unit, and the FP-40 can happily move between home piano, teaching instrument and portable performance setup.
